In the 1860s goldminers washed away major parts of the schist in the alluvial landscape near Cromwell in Central Otago. Today table mounts are towering above deep gorges in a dry desert landscape left by the goldrush. Some tourists are climbing the Bannockburn Track to the remains of goldmining times while thyme is sending heavy smells on sunny spring days. The miners in this period often lived in caves like this one. In den 1860er Jahren schwemmten Goldwäscher gigantische Massen des Schiefergesteins in der Nähe von Cromwell in Central Otago in Neuseeland weg. Zurück blieben Tafelberge mit tief ausgewaschenen Schluchten in einer Halbwüste, die Touristen heute auf dem Bannockburn Track erwandern. Im Frühling verströmt blühender Thymian an den Hängen einen betörenden Duft. Viele Goldwäscher aber lebten in solchen Höhlen.
