FECIT TOMBS. 519 The latter is to the following purport:â Nrevoleia Tyche, freedwoman of Julia Tyche, to herself and to Cains MunatiusFanstus, Augustal, and magistrate of the suburb, to whomthe Decurions, with the consent of the people, have grantedthe honour of the bisellium for his merits. Nasvoleia Tycheerected this monument in her lifetime for her freedmen andwomen, and for those of C. Munatius Faustus. The por-trait below is probably that of Naevoleia; the bas-relief issupposed to represent the dedication of the tomb. On oneside are the municipal magistrates, on the other the familyof Nasvoleia ; in the centre is alow altar, upon which a youthis placing some offering, and by it a cippus, which is torepresent the tomb. On the side next the triclinium is acurious bas-relief of a ship, which presents us with some r-TT m. Bas-relief Tyche. interesting particulars concerning the naval architecture ofthe Romans. The ends of the vessel are remarkable. Theprow is of singular shape, not clearly defined, and does notpresent the formidable beak of a ship of war : it is surmountedby a bust of Minerva. The poop ends in a swan or goosesneck (y^i/iVkos), from which there floats a flag: another flagis to be seen at the mast-head. The yard consists of twospars rudely lashed together. At the mast-head is somethingresembling a large block, in which ropes are fixed, whichMazois says are the halyards. In his engraving they lookmore like shrouds; and indeed a boy is making use of themas shrouds, and climbing up them. The crew consists ofchildren wrho are furling the sail. A man sitting at thepoop
