Ornate ghost pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus: this one 12 cms.) are found in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Their small size and highly effective camouflage, through body shape and colouring, makes them very difficult to see. They are usually yellow, red or black with patches of different hues, and blend in with their featherstar or coral environments. This one is unusually pale; it had been living in a very pale featherstar and had ventured a short distance from it. They prey on tiny shrimps and mysids. Photographed in Indonesian waters.
