His Memoirsare highly interesting. REYNOLDS, Sir Joshua, a celebratedartist, was born, in 1723, at Plympton, inDevonshire; of the grammar school ofwhich place his father, a clergyman, wasthe master. As he early manifested a tastefor drawing, he was placed under afterwards visited Rome, where liestudied for three years. In 1752 he settledin the British metropolis, where he rapidlyrose to eminence, and numbered Burke,Johnson, ^id othei illustiious cheracteis 4S4 RIC among his friends. When the Royal Aca-demy was instituted, in 176S, bo wae. unanimously chosen president, and wasknighted. In 1783 he was appointed prin-cipal painter to tlie king. He died , 1792.
