William Bailey Butler, brewer, c 1880s.
William Bailey Butler, brewer, c 1880s. William Butler's eldest son, William Bailey Butler, joined his father's Springfield brewing firm in 1877, followed shortly after by his brother Edwin. Butler Sr had built the brewery on a 7 acre site between between Cambridge Street and Grimstone Street. W. B. Butler died in 1886 so his father continued to work at the brewery until his own death in 1893. The firm then took on a new commercial strategy. Before the business had been content to supply beer to the free house trade but with Samuel Butler in charge they began to buy up pubs and chains of tied houses.
