STRANGE PHEMOMENA - SELF-CRUCIFIXION The self-crucifixion of Matthew Lovat, at Venice in July 1805. Engraving used in Kirby's Wonderful and Eccentric Museum; or, Magazine of Remarkable Characters, 1820. Lovat attempted suicide at the age of 46 by nailing himself to a cross, after crowning himself with a Crown of Thorns and slashing his side, in imitation of the death of Christ. He committed the deed in a rented house near the street Delle Monache, near the church of St. Alvise. Rescued (much against his will), he was eventually committed to the lunatic asylum of St. Servolo, where he died
