Ina criticism of Hawthornes tales, inGrahams Magazine in 1842, he firstpointed out the characteristics of theideal Short Story: brevity; singleeffect; direction of every part to apreestablished design; verisimilitude, and finality. Poe was born in 1809, five yearslater than Hawthorne. Educated in England and at theUniversity of Virginia, spending some time at West Pointand in the United States Army, and living in Richmond,Philadelphia and New York, as editor of literary publica-tions, he was under fardifferent influences thanwas the gentle soul ofHawthorne. His life wasone of struggle and mis-fortune. Like the Princein The Masque of theRed Death, he had afine eye for colors andeffects. He disregardedthe decora of mere fash-ion. His plans were boldand fiery, and his con-ceptions glowed withbarbaric lustre. Thereare some who wouldhave thought him Hawthorne,Poe cared everything forartistic effect and littlefor moral.
