The Kurdish freedom movement has called for a global hunger strike against human rights abuses in Turkey. Political prisoners in Izmir’s Sakran Prison launched the hunger strike demanding an end to the banning of books and social activities, prevention of social communion, isolation and raids on wards by guards. The strike has spread across several other prisons since. A return to negotiations between the government and Kurdish political groups is also amongst demands, as well as a meeting with imprisoned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan. Hunger strikes and protests will be staged outside the parliaments of Europe to raise awareness. Kurdish communities in South Wales will be holding a ten day hunger strike outside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay from Sunday onwards, please visit to show solidarity.
