Water industry. Dielectric pipes in an ozone disinfector unit at a waterworks. The glow is from sparks of electricity that are breaking up oxygen molecules (O2)to allow oxygen radicals to reform as the ozone molecule (O3). The ozone gas, which is passed through the water, is an effective disinfectant that sanitises the water by killing micro-organisms. The ozone also oxidises trace amounts of metals, pesticides and other pollutants, allowing them to be filtered from the water. Each unit uses 558 dielectric pipes and produces 8 kilograms of ozone per hour. Photographed at a waterworks operated by SMAT, the metropolitan water company of Turin, Italy.
