But the death of his father, in 1796, caused an interruption ofhis studies, which were not resumed until he was nearly nineteen years of determined to be a planter, he had abandoned all thoughts of a classicaleducation ; but an elder brother at this period persuaded him to pursue one ofthe liberal professions, and he entered so earnestly upon the business of prep-aration, that within two years from his commencement of the Latin grammarhe was received into the junior class of Yale college. The aim of his ambition was shown in the se-lection of his commencement thesis, which was, The qualifications necessaryto constitute a perfect statesman. He graduated in September, 1804, and im-mediately began the study of the law, in the well-known school of Litchfield,Ct., where he remained nearly two years.
