Marines from Okinawa led the contributions to the recovery mission known as Operation Tomodachi, setting up the command and control center for the Joint Task Force to help Japanese counterparts, moving debris to reopen the Sendai airport to allow relief aid to flow in and clearing mud from several schools to help them reopen. The 31st MEU went ashore on Oshima Island, which had been cut off from all help for two weeks. The MEU Marines helped restore power, set up showers, delivered food, fuel and fresh drinking water. The MEU Marines also cleared the roads and pulled debris out of the harbors so other help could arrive to end Oshima’s isolation. Marine pilots flew daily missions to reach isolated communities with emergency supplies, including food and water, along the hundreds of miles of affected coastline.
