The 90sq km Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary which occupies the forests on either side of the Marayoor Udumalped road is located in the rain shadow region of the High Ranges of southern Western Ghats straddling the Kerala TamilNadu border It is a unique protected area in the Western Ghats due to its ecological floral geomorphological and cultural significance Two tribal communities Muthavans and Hill Pulayas inhabit the sanctuary in 11 hamlets or kudies The Sanctuary provides the livelihood options for the tribes and helps in maintaining their cultural heritage
