Markandeya embraces a linga

Markandeya embraces a linga whilst looking over his shoulder. From his right arm hangs a flower basket. Four-armed Shiva emerges from the linga, splitting it apart, and with his right foot he kicks Yama in the stomach while transfixing him with the trishula (trident) held in his upper right and lower left hands. In his upper left hand Shiva carries the mriga (gazelle) and in his lower right the pasha (noose). Yama loses his crown during the fight and collapses supine on his buffalo. Dark complexioned, he carries in his upper right hand a danda (staff) and in his lower right a rope in which he has caught the young Markandeya.
