Heatwave, Milan, June 2022, satellite image
Satellite image showing land surface temperatures in Milan, Italy, on 18th June 2022. Mid June saw several consecutive days where air temperatures in Europe exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (C). This is over 10 degrees C higher than the average for the time of year. The image shows that built-up areas are hotter, known as the urban heat island effect, while areas with more vegetation are cooler. Due to human induced climate change heatwaves are increasing in frequency, duration and intensity. Data obtained by the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) instrument onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
