This image captures the crowning of the May Queen in 2022 at Great Torrington’s famous Mayfair. It shows the whole retinue of the May Queen, her Crowner, Attendants and Heralds. The Mayfair folk festival is held on the first Thursday in May. The town's children are at the centre of the day’s activities, with a May Queen being elected by pupils of the Junior School. The town’s Silver Band play all the music to accompany the dances and procession. The highlight is the famous crowning of the May Queen, maypole dancing and other children's events. A celebration Carnival follows on the Saturday evening.
