This is a close-up portrait shot of a frogmouth owl species. It is a captive bird and when taking this shot it was stood on a tree branch relaxing in the sun. I used a Cannon EOS 5D Mark II camera model with a 160mm focal length, with an aperture of and ISO 100 and shutter speed of 1/1000. I used a fairly fast shutter speed so that I could freeze the movement of the owl opening its eye. This striking creature is quite tamed and its mesmerizing eye I believe makes these animals quite captivating to look at as their eyes alone draw you too them. I used a very wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field so that i was able to create this blurred background effect. I wanted to do this so that it would bring out the owl more in the frame as it makes it stand out in the foreground, making the image extra striking to look at. Also, it places more focus on the creature as there are no distractions in the background either. I cropped this image to make the owl fill mot of the frame because I wanted it to be a portrait shot of the creature. I love this image a lot and i think that it would be a perfect image for a calender or magazine coverage because of the use of colour and the whole perspective and composition of the photograph. This owl has grey coloured feathers and a brightly orange coloured eye that stands a mile against its darker head and body. It is a smaller species of the owl family and goes by the name of Frogmouth. There is a mixture of grey tones and browns with its feathers, which is quite interesting as there is a nice contrast forming. It also has a very short beak and is displaying a calm presence.
