In passing by this spot daily, for a week or more, we ob-served this snake on the bushes and each time she escaped fine reptile was at last captured as the result of an inter-esting condition we discovered shortly after. 250 The Water Snakes If a man were on foot, no matter how cautious might behis movements, it was practically impossible to approach theolder snakes. The young reptiles and those of moderate sizewere less wary. However, if a man were mounted on a horse,the big fellows could be easily approached. This discovery wasat once put to advantage, and our elusive, scaly friend of theclearing was soon on the way North, in the company of manyother denizens of the lowgrounds and savannas. 260 THE REPTILE BOOK PLATE LXXXI.
