The 19th century painting by Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), of the symbolist poets who wished to liberate techniques of versification in order to allow greater room for "fluidity", and as such were sympathetic with the trend toward free verse in which symbolic imagery was used to signify the state of the poet's soul. Standing are Pierre Elzéar, Emile Blémont and Jean Aicard and front Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Léon Valade, Ernest d'Hervilly and Camille Pelletan.
