1969 statue of thomas more by l cubitt bevis with chelsea old church in background, cheyne walk, chelsea, london, england

the head of Thomas More, a dertail of the statue by L Cubitt Bevis, outside Chelsea Old Church, in Chelsea, London, England, seen on a sunny day beneath a blue sky. More was executed in 1533 following his refusal to accept the English King, Henry VIII, as supreme head of the Church of England. Prominent as a scholar and in political affairs, More wrote the seminal political tract, Utopia, and lived in Chelsea from 1520, at a time when it was a sparsely populated rural plot on the western edge of London. More built one of the chapels in what became Chelsea Old Church and this was one of the few aspects of the church to survive bombing during the second world war. The church, seen in the background, was rebuilt following its destruction in 1941.
