Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) with antibody fragments attached, computer model. This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. The image shows the outer protein shell of the virus (red), known as the capsid. It is covered with antibody fragments (pink, light to dark blue), known as Fab (antigen binding fragments). CMV is transmitted by aphids and infects a wide number of crop plants, causing stunted growth, wilting, mottling and poor fruit yield. Cryo-electron microscopy uses multiple angled beams of electrons to image specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The resulting 'slices' of data are reconstructed into 3-D models on computer.
