19th century Tŷ Crwn roundhouse prison in Barmouth, Gwynned, North Wales

Ty Crwn, the roundhouse, Crwn was erected in 1834 as a lock-up. It consists of two cells, one for men and one for women and was last used in 1861. The lock-up was mainly used to house petty offenders, and drunkards were often sent there to sober up. It was also used to detain offenders as they waited to be transferred to the local courts or county gaol at Dolgellau. The jail is said to be constructed in a circular design so that the Devil had no hiding places.
