North America Nebula (NGC 7000), infrared image. This is an emission nebula named for its appearance in visible light. It is 2000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus. Part of the Pelican Nebula is at upper right. This image was obtained with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Infrared radiation of increasing wavelength (decreasing temperature) has been color-coded blue, blue-green, green, and red. Dust clouds in visible light become transparent in this view, which shows the internal structure of the nebula, and dusty cocoons enveloping newborn stars. Image published 2011.
