Japan: Tokugawa Ieyoshi (22 June 1793 - 27 July 1853), twelth ruler of the Tokugawa Shogunate (r. 1837-1853). Hanging scroll painting, 19th century. Tokugawa Ieyoshi, born Tejiro, was the 12th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate and the second son of shogun Tokugawa Ienari. He became shogun after his father retired to become 'Ogosho' ('retired shogun'), and would not truly rule until 1841. He then purged his father's entire clique and implemented the Tenpo Reforms, which were greatly unpopular to nobles and commoners alike. In 1853, the US forced Japan to open to trade using gunboat diplomacy.
