The view over Martyrs Square in Beirut from the roof top pool at Le Gray hotel. The hotel was a long time in the making; construction intermittently paused when in 2006 neighbouring Israel unexpectedly started dropping bombs on south Beirut. Finally opened in September 2009, some see the designer lodge as the beginning of a new era for the city, not just in terms of style, but also identity.
