The 1916 caption reads: “Pieter de Hooch 1629-1677. Dutch School - Court of a Dutch House paved with Bricks in National Gallery. Signed P D H A 1658 - on a stone built into the base of the porch. Painted in oil on canvas. 2 ft 5 in h. x 1 ft in w.” Pieter de Hooch was a Dutch Golden Age painter famous for his genre works of quiet domestic scenes with an open doorway. He was a contemporary, in the Delft Guild of St. Luke, of Jan Vermeer with whom his work shares themes and style.
