19th Century view of the ruins of the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built. It was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus (r. 79–81) and used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Roman mythology. It is now substantially ruined because of earthquakes and stone-robbers (for spolia).
