In the construction of hai-bours, the greatdesiderata are sufficient depth of water and perfectsecurity for the vessels likely to frequent them,together with the greatest possible facilities foringress during any weather; while the chiefobstacles to be surmoiuited are the action of thewaves upon the protecting piers and breakwaters,and the formation of sand-banks and bars. The design of harbours may be classified underthe following heads: 1. Harljours of refuge andanchorage breakwaters; 2. Deep water and tidalharbours for commercial purposes; 3. Kanted orcurved piers; 4. Straight piers; 5. Quays orwharfs. These different works are obviously suited fordifferent localities, and for contending with differentexposures.
