Karl Ernst von Baer, 19th century German biologist, (1900). Born in Estonia, Baer (1792-1876) is regarded as one of the founding fathers of embryology. He discovered the mammalian ovum (egg) in 1827. From 1834 von Baer was a professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Russia. In later life he was a prominent critic of the theories of Charles Darwin.
