ISS onboard view. View of mission commander Kent V. Rominger and mission specialist Julie Payette onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The astronauts are in the American-built Unity module near the hatch leading to the Russian-built Zarya module. The astronauts are preparing the ISS for occupancy. Rominger and Payette were part of the crew of the Discovery Space Shuttle mission STS-96 (May 27-June 6 1999). STS-96 also launched a small satellite called STARSHINE. Students worldwide will observe STARSHINE in order to derive Earth's atmospheric density. The ISS will be completed in 2003 and will be used to study the effect of weightlessness on materials & biological tissues.
