The Dunottar Castle (the first ocean liner of several to bear the name) photographed in the early 1890s – the ship was built in 1890 by Fairfield Ship Building & Engineering Co at Govan, Scotland, UK, with a speed of 17 knots. She completed a homeward run from Cape Town in 16 days 14 hours in 1891. In 1894 she grounded near the Eddystone Lighthouse. She had a refit in 1897 when the funnels were heightened, the yards were removed and she was given a wheelhouse. In 1915 she foundered off Cape Wrath in very heavy weather – a vintage 1890s photograph.

The Dunottar Castle (the first ocean liner of several to bear the name) photographed in the early 1890s – the ship was built in 1890 by Fairfield Ship Building & Engineering Co at Govan, Scotland, UK with a length of 433ft, a beam of 49ft 8in and a service speed of 17 knots. She was designed to outclass the other ships in the Union fleet and in 1891 completed the homeward run from Cape Town in 16 days 14 hours. In 1894 she grounded near the Eddystone Lighthouse. She had a refit in 1897 when the funnels were heightened, the yards were removed and she was given a wheelhouse. In November 1899 she carried General Buller and 1500 troops to Cape Town for Boer War duties and on the following voyage carried Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener. In 1900 she became part of the merged Union-Castle fleet. Dunottar Castle was sold to the Royal Mail Line in 1913 for cruising, renamed ‘Caribbean’ and given a white livery. In 1914 she was requisitioned by the British government and served as a transport for a time before being converted to an armed merchant cruiser. On the 26th September 1915, whilst on a voyage to Scapa Flow, she foundered off Cape Wrath in extremely heavy weather with the loss of 15 lives. This image is from a photograph in an old album of shipping memorabilia. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1890s photograph.
