Hookers influence for good isfelt in New England to-day; and inthe development of his life and thelives of the other Pilgrims, Delft en-larged its boundaries and touched theNew World. Half a century after the revival ofDelft, referred to, another disaster setback her progress. In 1654 the greatmagazine, containing 85,000 poundsof gunpowder, exploded, causing aterrible holocaust, and scatteringabout widespread destruction to prop-erty. How many were killed hasnever been known; the sound, it issaid, was heard even at The Helder;more than two hundred houses wereentirely demolished, and there was nota building in the town that was notdamaged. Delft could boast of as great a rec-ord of usefulness to the world at largeand to the country of which she is apart
