Philae lander. Model of the Philae lander on the surface of an asteroid. Philae is carried onboard ESA's (European Space Agency) Rosetta spacecraft, which was launched on 2 March 2004 on a mission to study the comet 67P/Churyuma-Gerasimenko. It is expected to reach the comet in mid 2014 at which point Philae will land on its surface and record various data using the 10 instruments it carries. These instruments weigh kg, making up nearly one third of the mass of the lander.
