Graafian follicle. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a cat (Felis domestica) ovary showing a mature Graafian follicle (round, upper centre). Within the follicle is the developing oocyte (small orange circle). Also within the follicle is a fluid-filled cavity (yellow, u-shaped), known as the follicular antrum. The oocyte becomes an ovum (egg cell) when it is released into the oviduct (fallopian tube). In cats ovulation is induced by mating. Magnification: x37 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
