The histologyof the nodules andthe pendulousflaps is similar, and appears to berepresented by anovergrowth of thefibrous tissue ofthe skin and thesubcutaneous tis-sues thecause of this over-growth nothing is known ; it affects men and women equally, and isnot confined to any race or clime. In many cases in which the disease has been confined to a limitedarea the pendulous masses have been successfully excised, and thesubsequent records of the patients have demonstrated that thedisease shows no disposition to recur or to manifest itself in anyother region of the body. It will be necessary to refer again tomolluscum fibrosum in dealing with * 2. I Fig. 108.—Mollusuuui tumour was successfully removed by Mott. 160 TUMOURS. 6. Myxomata. Myxomata are tumours composed of a tissue identical with thatwhich surrounds the vessels of the umbilical cord. The genus contains three species :—(1) Nasal and aural polypi \(2) cutaneous myxomata ; (3) neuro-myxomata. Myxomatous tissue is in many instances the result of degenera-tive changes in fibrous, cartilaginous, and sarcomatous tissues. Itsmicroscopical characters may be best studied in a nasal polypus. Anasal myxoma has a capsule of mucous membrane covered withcolumnar ciliated, cubical, or stratified epithelium ; sometimes thethree varieties may be demonstrated on one tumour. Immediatelybeneath the mucous membrane there is a firm layer of fibrous tissue, which gradually becomes continuous with a gelatinous mass composedof cells furnished with long delicate branching processes—spidercells.
