THE EXPRESS AND FREIGHT ORDER DEPARTMENT, shown above, is located on the third ——«———floor, and is devoted exclusively to the packing of seeds that go by freight or express. Here'is kept in large drawers, bins, barrels, and in sacks a complete dupli- cate stock of all the garden and farm seeds catalogued by us. Only men are employed in this department, and by years of practice they have become very efficient in packing boxes, barrels, and sacks of seed neatly and securely. As soon as filled, the orders, each accompanied by a memorandum sheet, specifying number and description of packages, route, etc., and signed by the " filler," are sent by the elevator to the ground floor, where the shipping clerk makes out the bills of lading, and sees that the wagons are properly loaded for the different freight stations. Each customer is then advised, by mail, of the shipment. The elevator shaft is located about twenty-five feet back from the northern door on the York Avenue side; thus a wide, unobstructed area, extending to the wide doorway south, allows ample room for the sorting of the sacks, boxes, and barrels intended for the different railroads. THE CHECKING TABLE. This is from a photo- —————————graph of the principal table at which, after being filled, orders are again "checked off'" by experienced clerks, to make sure that no mistakes have been made. In each department every order is carefully "checked" and a notice put in, so that we can immediately trace the responsibility should a mistake occur. THE FLOWER SEED DEPARTMENT.
