Big Brutus is one of the world s two largest shovels Built by the Bucyrus Erie for the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company it was used from 1963 to 1974 The bucket would hold 90 cubic yards or about 135 tons of material Coal was not mined with the shovel just the top layer of earth to get to the coal vein The working weight was 11 000 000 lbs and was 160 feet tall in total A three man crew operated the shovel and it ran 24 hours a day 365 days a year for 11 years. Big Brutus in now a museum attraction with a small building holding artifacts and a video story about the gigantic shovel.
