Cocoa pod split open to reveal the white pulp and seeds. This is the fruit of the cocoa (Theobroma cacao), or cacao, tree from which cocoa beans are extracted. The leathery yellow pod contains up to 60 beans embedded in soft pulp. These are dried, roasted and ground to produce cocoa powder, which is then used to make chocolate. Photographed on a cocoa plantation, Palo Blanco, Piura, Peru.
