James Johnson (1777-1845), British physician and writer on tropical medicine. Born in Derry, he was apprenticed to a local surgeon at the age of 15 then took up his studies at Belfast. He moved to London and passed his examinations in 1798. He served as surgeon on several naval vessels, making voyages to Newfoundland, Egypt and India. In 1814 he attended upon the Duke of Clarence, later King William IV, who appointed him the King's physician extraordinary. He wrote many popular and influential medical books, including 'The Influence of Tropical Climates on European Constitutions' and 'Change of Air, or, The Philosophy of Travelling'.
