A father hoists his son onto his shoulders for a better view at the First Million Youth March in Harlem

A father hoists his son onto his shoulders for a better view at the First Million Youth March in Harlem on September 5, 1998. Official estimates of the crowd were only 6000, a figure disputed by the organizers. Khallid Muhammed is organizing a second rally and is vowing to have it with or without a permit from the New York City Police Dept. This year the organizers of the march received their permit without any interference from the city to have their event on September 2, 2000. (© Richard B. Levine)
