Runners & horses compete in the approximately 35 km Man V Horse marathon over rugged Welsh terrain. The event is sponsored by Whole Earth foods and was conceived in 1980 by landlord Gordon Green after overhearing a pub debate in the Neuadd Arms, Llanwrtyd Wells, about whether man was equal to horse running cross country over distance. Huw Lobb was the first man to beat a horse and won the £1,000 annually escalating prize total of £25,000 in 2004. 2014 saw the reintroduction of escalating prize money (£500 per year until won) and introduction of electronic timing.
