Caption: Axu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2003. Headware, Khampa style. Nomadic women from Eastern Tibet at an annual Nyingmapa festival in Axu, a very remote area of the former Tibetan kingdom of Kham. A leftover from the days when Kham was tribal, most women wear the clan's wealth on their heads, a strategy for a quick getaway if invaded. Chunks of rad coral from when the Himalayas were underwater, amber and turquoise adorn their heads, fingers and necks. Although now usually reserved for festivals, women in laces like Axu wear their jewlery every day.
