The Kalasasaya, the walled temple, at the archaeological site at Tiwanaku, on the Altiplano in Bolivia


The ancient ruined city of Tiwanaku lies on the Altiplano 70 kilometres west of La Paz in Bolivia. Founded around 1000BC it had become by 100BC the centre of a major empire that lasted almost a 1000 years and encompassed most of Bolivia southern Peru and northern Argentina and Chile. The Kalasasaya, the walled temple is the sacred centre of the city where the emperors were buried. Kalasasaya means standing stones in Aymara
