Musk Ox standing in rain at Musk Ox farm in Palmer, Alaska
Musk Ox ( Ovibos moschatus) at Musk Ox Farm at Palmer, Alaska 45 miles North of Anchorage. They are about 5 feet high and 7 feet long. They weigh 400 to 880 lbs or on average 285 Kg. Males have larger horns than the female. Habitat is the Arctic Tundra and are currently found in Northern Alaska, Canada, Ellesmere Island, Wrangel Island, Norway, Sweden, and Siberia. Calves born in April-June. Mating is in July-August. Lifespan around 24 years. Main predater (besides man) is the Arctic Wolf. Herds of approx. 10 in the Summer. At lower altitudes the herds gorge on plant growth to gain enough weight to last through the Winter. Herds of 15-20 seek higher elevation in Winter where strong Arctic Winds usually keep the snow clear and the food is often Bearberry, Willow, and Crowberry. Image taken with Nikon Film camera and Nikon 105mm Macro lens in 2012. Taken at Musk Ox Farm . I have personally seen a wild herd of Musk Ox on Wrangel Island in 1993.
