Yellow-billed Magpie (Pica nuttalli) Sacramento County California USA
Yellow-billed Magpie is a species endemic to California and as such is vulnerable to extinction because of the narrow habitat range. This species, like many corvids, is especially vulnerable to West Nile virus, which arrived in the bird's habitat in 2004. This disease reduced the Yellow-billed Magpie's population by half. The population has since recovered but this illustrates how a species with limited geographic range can be threatened by a localized environmental stress.
