St Mary Aldermary, church in the City of London, rebuilt in Perpendicular Gothic style 1675-1704 by Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of 1666. Sword rest of 1682; this example in oak is unique amongst Wren’s City churches: elsewhere they are of wrought iron. Above a lion's head is the emblem of the Order of the Garter flanked by fluttering cherubs holding a crown
