The trees, which were making very poor growth andcarrying only a sparse, yellow foliage, responded almost immediatelyto the applications. Within ten days the foliage took on a greenercolor and a liberal growth of new leaves appeared. In the fall thesmall yellow leaves of the check plot dropped early while those oftlie nitrogen plots hung much later. On October 12, 1918, the secondyear of the experiment, the check plot had lost 95 percent of itsfoliage: the one-pound plot, 65 percent; the two-pound plot, 35 per-cent; and the three-pound, foiu-pound, and si.\-poimd plots only
