Cast in 1906 in Paris by sculptor Ville Vallgren the statue was unveiled in 1908 According to the sculptor the girl has risen from the sea and symbolizes the birth of Helsinki She is also sometimes called the Mermaid She is surrounded by four sea lions and fish spouting water The granite fountain is by Ellel Saarinen The fountain serves as a venue for various celebrations and rituals including Vappu parties on the eve of May Day
