Vintage portrait of Irish-American boxer Paddy Ryan (1851 - 1900). Ryan, born in Tipperary, Ireland, was nicknamed the "Trojan Giant" after moving to the US and living in the Troy area of New York State. He claimed the bare-knuckle Heavyweight Championship of America by beating Joe Goss in 1880 in an 87 round bout but lost the title in 1882 when he was knocked out by John L Sullivan.
