The names of William Ellery and WilliamEllery Channing are properly placed in consecu-tive chapters. The men they imite stood, in morethan one aspect, in a kindred relation to eachother. Believing firmly in the doctrine of hered-ity, I have placed them in juxtaposition. Manyof the traits of Dr. Channing may be traced tosrerms found in his distins-uished ancestor. Theone was born early in the same century which pro-duced the other. They were alike in many oftheir qualities of character, in their deep andsteadfast patriotism, in their devotion to truth andto liberty, and their faith in and loyalty to thatgreat Being, the God of nature, of reason, and ofrevelation.
