Surface of the Moon. Optical image of the moon during, showing densely packed overlapping craters in the southern highland region. The Tycho crater can be seen at centre-left. At 86km wide and about 5km deep, this is one of the most prominent lunar impact craters. It was named after the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and is surrounded by a distinctive ray system forming long spokes that reach as far as 1,500 km.
